(Winnipeg) – Ranked first in the MCAC and #11 in the nation, the Pilots made it five victories in a row on Wednesday night by blanking the CMU Blazers 3-0 in women’s soccer action at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.

Dominating possession in both halves, Providence scored the game-winner in the 8th minute when Serena Negrich (Burnaby, BC) passed two CMU defenders, dribbled into the box and found Jordyn Briggs (Langley, BC) at the top of the 18-yard box for her first goal of the MCAC season.

Then in the 27th minute, Negrich received a pass from Laurianne Chiasson (Victoria, BC) and drove past defenders towards the CMU goal. Blazers keeper, Emilie Hasker made the initial save, but the Pilots’ rookie was first to the loose ball, one-timing the rebound past Hasker to give her team a 2-0 lead. The goal was Negrich’s sixth of the season.

Minutes after kicking-off the second half, the Pilots would score again. Lauren Mazda (Kelowna, BC) dispossessed a CMU defender who was attempting to dribble out of her own box. Mazda’s tackle trickled the ball right into the path of Kayla Miller (Altona, MB) who counted her first goal of the campaign, and the Pilots led 3-0.

Supported by another strong defensive performance the Pilots’ backline, Sahiba Kaily (Surrey, BC) stopped one shot in each half to earn the clean sheet in the Providence goal. The win lifts the Pilots to 6-1-1 on the season sets up a critical match on Saturday, when Providence travels to St-Boniface to take on the 4-1-1 USB Rouges.
