Providence University College may have to rename its monthly high school athletics award for August. Something like “Providence Multi-Sport Student Athlete of the Month” could fit the bill. Because Carman’s Sydney Last doesn’t exactly limit herself to a single game.

In her Grade 12 year at Carman Collegiate she captained the volleyball and basketball teams, advanced to provincials in badminton and also played baseball in the spring.

“I’ve been given talent from God,” she says. “I just really love to play sports, and I want to do it for God’s glory.”

Perhaps appropriately, Last will attend Providence University College in Otterburne, Manitoba starting next month, when she’ll begin a one-year Biblical Studies certificate. She’ll be representing the senior Pilots on the basketball court, and she also hopes to find some time to participate in rec sports.

She tends to use her time well.

Through the summer, Last has been employed at her local church, where she’s been planning the Vacation Bible School program. She’s also been helping out at Youth For Christ.

“I love reaching out to children,” she explains. “Children are God’s beautiful work.”

She’s also excited to be a light and show God’s love both on and off the court while at Providence, and also in the rest of life.

“I’m just seeing where God will take me,” she says, adding that she feels amazed and grateful to have won the Student Athlete of the Month award.
